This blog is dedicated to (Kachina), a pretty rare breed-- a Curly Black & White Tobiano Missouri Foxtrotter. Find out more about her background by looking at her parents' blogs. (below)
There are probably only about 300 Curly Missouri Foxtrotters in the world and about 20 or so of those are Black Tobiano. As far as we know, she is the only one homozygous for black. Which means that she will never give birth to a chestnut or a palomino. So, that's how Rare she is. AND....her markings are especially beautiful and sought after.

Her name came to me nearly the instant I saw her. I had chosen "Kachina" as a possibility for a tobiano before she was born.

Kachina means Spirit

Kachinas are the spirits of departed ancestors, of rain and clouds, ofsupernatural beings, and of life in its manymanifestations. Lore says, they are guardians of the Hopi and carry the prayers of the people tothe spirit world. Carved Kachina dolls are given to Hopi children to help them identify the variousspiritual figures and their costumes.
During
the annual cycle of Pueblo rituals, brilliantly costumed andmasked Kachina dancers, acting as intermediaries, summon their spirit ancestors for blessings of sunshine, rain, bountiful crops, and success in hunting, and thank them for the favors bestowed upon the pueblo. Today the Kachina is an important element in Southwest jewelry.
